The Complete Guide to UK Driving Test Manoeuvres in 2026

Driving test manoeuvres are the part of the practical test that most learners worry about. But with proper practice and understanding, they're very manageable. Here's a complete breakdown of what you might be asked to do.

    Which Manoeuvres Could Come Up?

During your practical test, the examiner will ask you to perform one of the following manoeuvres (chosen at random):

    1. Parallel parking (reverse parallel park)

You'll be asked to park behind a vehicle at the side of the road, reversing into a space roughly two car lengths long. The key is slow speed, good observation, and using your reference points.

    2. Parking in a bay (forward or reverse)

At the test centre car park, you'll either drive into or reverse into a parking bay. You need to end up reasonably straight and within the lines.

    3. Pulling up on the right and reversing

You'll pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse approximately two car lengths, and then rejoin traffic. This tests your ability to reverse in a straight line and check for traffic before pulling away.

Why These Are Easier in an Automatic

In a manual car, you need to balance clutch control while steering during manoeuvres. In an automatic, you simply use the brake to control your speed, leaving you free to focus entirely on steering and observation. This is one reason our students at EyeLevel find manoeuvres much less stressful.

    Top Tips for Each Manoeuvre

For parallel parking: Use your door mirrors to judge distance. Go slowly. If it's going wrong, stop and correct — it's not a fault to adjust. The examiner wants to see control and awareness, not perfection.

For bay parking: Pick your reference point (usually when the line reaches your side mirror). Turn the wheel fully, creep forward or backward slowly, and straighten up when you're in the bay. Check your mirrors throughout.

For pulling up on the right: Signal right, check mirrors and blind spot, pull over smoothly. When reversing, look through the rear window primarily and keep checking all around. Before pulling away, thorough observation is essential.

    Common Faults to Avoid

  • Not checking mirrors enough — The examiner wants to see constant observation during manoeuvres
  • Going too fast — Slow is smooth, smooth is safe
  • Mounting the kerb — This is a serious fault. If you feel you're getting too close, stop and correct
  • Forgetting to signal — Always signal when pulling away from a manoeuvre

  • How We Teach Manoeuvres at EyeLevel

Our instructors break every manoeuvre into simple, repeatable steps with clear reference points. We practise each one until it becomes automatic (no pun intended). Most of our students master all three manoeuvres within 3-4 lessons.
