What to Expect on Your First Driving Lesson

Your first driving lesson can feel daunting, but knowing what to expect makes it much easier. Whether you've never sat behind a wheel or you've had some practice, here's a step-by-step guide to your first lesson with EyeLevel Driving School.

    Before the Lesson

    What to bring:

  • Your provisional driving licence (you must have this — you cannot drive without it)
  • Comfortable shoes with a thin sole (avoid thick boots or heels)
  • Your glasses or contact lenses if you need them for driving

  • What to wear: Comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict movement. You'll be turning to check blind spots and using your feet on the pedals.

    Your Instructor Picks You Up

At EyeLevel, we offer door-to-door service. Your instructor will pick you up from your home, workplace, or another agreed location. They'll greet you, check your provisional licence, and put you at ease before you start.

    Getting to Know the Car

Before you drive anywhere, your instructor will spend time introducing you to the car controls:

  • The cockpit drill — Adjusting your seat, mirrors, headrest, and seatbelt
  • The pedals — In an automatic, there are just two: accelerator (right) and brake (left). No clutch to worry about!
  • The gear selector — P (Park), R (Reverse), N (Neutral), D (Drive)
  • Indicators, wipers, lights — Where everything is and how to use it

  • Your First Drive

You'll start on a quiet residential road. Your instructor will guide you through:

  • 1. Starting the engine and moving off — In an automatic, this is as simple as pressing the brake, selecting D, checking your mirrors and blind spot, signalling, and gently pressing the accelerator
  • 2. Steering — Keeping the car straight, gentle turns
  • 3. Stopping — Smooth, controlled use of the brake
  • 4. Left and right turns — If you progress quickly, your instructor may introduce basic junctions

  • What Your Instructor Is Looking For

Don't worry — your instructor isn't judging you. The first lesson is about:

  • Assessing your starting point
  • Understanding how you learn best
  • Building a rapport and making you comfortable
  • Getting you excited about learning to drive

  • How You'll Feel Afterwards

Most students leave their first lesson surprised at how much they achieved. You'll likely have driven on real roads, made real turns, and started building muscle memory. Some people feel tired — driving requires intense concentration — and that's completely normal.

    What Happens Next?

After your first lesson, your instructor will discuss your progress and suggest a lesson plan. Most students benefit from 1-2 lessons per week to maintain momentum.
